Daily Report May 10, 2006

Dear Readers,

it is Monday, May 15, 2006. We just crossed the border to Peru and I am going to update you on our trip.

The last few days were neither easy nor without problems. The miles were difficult and exhausting – the Panamericana made us pay in all respects.

Due to the extreme stress and challenging road conditions, it was impossible to write my daily reports and I apologize for the delay.

Yours,

Matthias Jeschke

We began our night journey determined to make up lost time and gain hours on our way to Guatemala. Our next stop was Tapachula near the Guatemalan border. Despite a 10-hour delay we were greeted like heros at the local VW dealership. More than 300 guests, city dignitaries and employees welcomed us with brass band and everything imaginable.

The dealership which had been severely damaged by a flood just a few weeks ago, was decorated; a table was set, TV and radio stations as well as newspapers were present. We had lunch while our vehicles received a quick service including a tire change. It was too bad we had to leave after only 50 minutes. Once again we were struck by the friendliness of the people.

Next we encountered a perfect border situation at the Guatemalan border where our friend Ricardo joined us on our trip through the entire country. Unfortunately, the high volume of traffic dashed our hopes of a speedy progress and we didn’t make it to Escuintla until 5 pm (arrival had been planned for 9 am). Again it was great to see who was waiting for us: many children from a nearby school were presenting us with the country flag and sang for us. I explained to them our trip across the continent and through various countries and we gave them a trip to a children’s theme park, before we continued on to El Salvador.

In Escuintla, two of the four journalists we had invited had boarded our record vehicles and accompanied us to Managua, Nicaragua. We were now four passengers in each vehicle.

On the border of the two Central American states, a familiar delegation of the German Embassy, led by Mr. Herbener, and a special police task force for our protection (which had escorted us on our scouting trip), were waiting for us. The German Embassy thankfully had prepared and taken on the customs procedure and escorted us together with the police task force all the way to the border to Honduras.

Unfortunately, the media event in an amphitheatre in El Salvador had to be cancelled since we were running so late. We dearly regretted this and were quite frustrated because of the pressure and our intention to make it in time. On the border to Honduras, the police task force handed us over to a Honduran military unit (which escorted us through their country) at around 2:30 am.
