Daily Report May 6, 2006

After leaving Costa, the friendly Greek, we were facing 1,200 kilometers a lot of which were covered by the fairly new Stewart-Cassiar Highway. This spectacular North-South connector through Canada’s  westernmost wilderness is awe-inspiring by day but less so at night when the road changes into a hard-to-navigate stretch of semi-asphalt and gravel with animal crossings and narrow curves. Because all gas stations here are closed at night, we had to juggle our fuel supplies. We were running on empty when we reached a re-opening gas oil station in the early morning.

We were still behind schedule when we faced yet another challenge. Alpha 3 ** was unable to accelerate properly because the vehicle was jerking excessively. The attempt to fix the problem was unsuccessful at first and only cost us more time. It was only with the help of Mr. Schneider of the VW Autohaus Max, whom we consulted via satellite telephone, and Wolfgang Schmuck’s OnBoard diagnostics, that we were finally able to identify a clogged air mass sensor as the culprit. This sensor would continue to give us trouble with various vehicles during the trip.

The repair caused us to arrive for the event in Prince George, Canada, much later than planned. The city and our partners however suprised us with their outstanding organisation.

Steve Kluss of Fountain Tire had optimally prepared the scheduled switch to summer tires (Goodyear with run-flat technology) and he and his crew went right to work. The high-end run-flat technology, the performance of which is to be reconfirmed during the world record tour, will enable us to continue on a flat tire over long distances (up to 250 km/155 miles, depending on driving speed); unfortunately this technology had not been available for our size winter tires.

We were officially greeted by the Deputy Prime Minister and representatives of the Canadian Tourism Commission and of alternative energy associations. There were quite a few spectators and media representatives, and a food buffet as well.

After remounting the tires and refreshing the team we donated the remaining winter tires for a university project and started on our nightly trip to Vancouver.

** Alpha 1 = LM-MJ 171 (Ralph Stegbauer, Peter Scherer, Matthias Jeschke)
Alpha 2 = LM-MJ 172 (Wolfgang Schunk, Eric Dow, Jörg Sand)
Alpha 3 = LM-MJ 173 (Dieter Geng, Johan Nietvelt, Frank Bels)
