Daily Report May 4, 2006

The long awaited day we worked so hard for has arrived - the starting day of the biofuel record tour „Panamericana2006“.

It is a day that evokes a variety of emotions in me and many others, but it is also a day we all have been looking forward to, and finally we are off.

Everybody slept longer than usually. We did not spot any of our friends at the breakfast table until 10:30 a.m. After a short briefing at noon we moved out of our rooms and loaded the cars at 1 p.m. This was a time-consuming undertaking partially due to the installation of the onboard cameras, and took until 4:30 p.m. Again we received help from friends when the air transport company of the previous day let us use their hangar. This enabled us to work in pleasant temperatures without freezing off any fingers and noses. Since the cars were completely frozen over, the crew of Jack Barber Airtaxi loaned us special burners to defrost our cars and to make the biodiesel more fluid.

Every driver used the spare time until 8 p.m. to get some rest and call friends and family. By 9 p.m. we had filled up the cars and at 10 p.m. we met with the local chief of police to discuss the start. He escorted us to the northernmost check point very close to the Arctic Sea where Juergen Malieske (team leader for the country coordinators) arranged a satellite telephone conference which brought together relatives, sponsors and assistants shortly before the start. Despite the freezing cold, strong wind and snow flurries and the fact that we were outside and miserably cold**, it was fun to be part of the countdown telephone conference. Together we counted down the last 15 seconds and had a picture perfect start.

**Since we will be in the sunny southern U.S. in approximately two days and will not be able to access the luggage on top of the car until then, we decided against wearing heavy shoes and long underwear.
